Dress, 1850-1855

Here we see a return to the two-piece dress, after the one-piece dresses of the Empire era. The waist was supposed to be extremely small. Here, for example, it has a circumference of merely 46 cm. Only a woman who had worn a tightly laced corset since early childhood would have a waist that small. But most girls and women did not lace their corsets that tightly.

A two-piece dress in cotton muslin with a floral and cartouche print. Floral pattern dresses were popular in the 1850s. Sheer ruffles and layers upon layers of starched petticoats gave the skirt plenty of volume. The dress was worn with separate, embroidered sleeves and a neck insert.
