Dress, 1815-1820

This is an everyday dress. However, the cotton, wool and silk blend fabric is exclusive and woven using a complex technique.

The thin, imported cotton fabrics were banned in France. Instead, the Emperor wished to support the country’s domestic industries. As a result, dresses made from materials other than cotton became popular.

The bodice of the dress is ruched and cut below the bust. The fabric is woven with cotton warp and has elements of wool yarn and silk stripes in both the warp and the weft directions.
