Dress, about 1895
Dress from about 1895 when extremely puffy ‘leg-of-mutton’ sleeves became the height of fashion. It is a fitted, one-piece dress. This type of dress, known as a ‘princess’ model, became popular in connection with Victoria of Baden becoming the Swedish Crown Princess in the 1880s.
A dress with a train, made from silk. The dark red fabric is woven with one red and one black thread. The dress has steel springs inside the bodice, which is lined with cotton. The skirt has a wool lining. Parts of the dress have been sewn using a sewing machine. Sewing machines became common in Sweden from the 1860s onwards.
